The course of study of St. Philip School follows the guidelines of the Catholic Church, the Diocese of Providence, and the State of Rhode Island. Our educational mission is based on the Christian principle, “to teach as Jesus did” – with love, concern, dedication, and understanding. This mission provides for a full range of academic, physical, spiritual, and creative opportunities.
St. Philip School’s curriculum includes a fully integrated religion/family life program, reading, math, language arts, social studies, science, physical education, music, art, and technology. Spanish is offered as an enrichment program in grades K-8. To help meet the individual needs of the students, the school also offers the services of a remedial reading teacher, a special needs teacher, a nurse, a technology coordinator, and a librarian assistant.
Technology is an integral part of the learning experience at St. Philip School. Internet access, use of portable Alpha-Smart computer labs, stationary computers in every classroom, a library/media center, and the school’s Automated Weather Station help to prepare students to meet the many challenges of today’s rapidly changing world.
In-school programs are offered which help students to deal with family problems, handicapping conditions, peer relations, and substance abuse. A ‘Buddy Program’ which pairs middle school students with students in grades K-2 helps to foster student relationships and offers a chance for older students to assist younger ones with special projects and programs.
Service to others is a vital component of Catholic educational tradition. Students are encouraged to make a difference in their world by channeling their energies and efforts in service to others. They regularly provide items for the parish St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry; sponsor raffles and participate in fundraising drives for local charities and overseas missions; and conduct collections of money, clothing, personal care items, and household goods for victims of accidents, illness, natural disasters, house fires, or other tragic life events.
